    Congratulations on making it to Week 4!

    In addition to being Recreation and Parks month, June is also Bike Month.

    Bike Month presents an opportunity to get out for a ride on your bike, try riding for the first time, or participate in other forms of active transportation, like walking! Active transportation is any form of human-powered transportation. Not only is it good for your health, but it’s also good for your wallet as it saves money on gas and parking.

    Why not try biking in Barrie?

    Our transit is bike-friendly! There are bike racks on all Barrie Transit buses, which are free, easy to use and have instruction labels to help. The City has bicycle locking posts and racks on Dunlop Street and at Meridian Square, and there are also bike racks at City Hall, all recreation centres, library branches, the transit terminal and both GO Stations.

    Did you know? Barrie has over 47 km of cycling infrastructure in addition to cycling trails located in City parks.

    When riding, we recommend wearing the proper protective equipment including your helmet to stay safe, and be sure to stick to the roads, paths and trails that match your skill level.

    Let us know how you’re actively getting around the city this week by posting a photo or story!

    Welcome to Week 3! This week's theme is to explore the City's trails.

    Connecting (or reconnecting) with nature can provide many wonderful benefits, including reducing stress. One of the best ways to connect with nature is to get out for a trail hike. Our tips: leave the headphones at home and your phone in your pocket; you’ll enjoy the sights and sounds of nature!

    Did you know? Barrie residents enjoy access to 88 km+ of public trails, which are naturally beautiful any time of year. If you are interested in exploring some of our trails, visit barrie.ca/trails to find trail maps and to learn more about where they are and how to stay safe when you are using them!

    Tried a neat trail recently and want to share? Post a photo or a story for our 30 for 30 community!

    Don’t forget to keep going and don’t give up -- we are more than halfway through!

    Welcome to Week 2!

    Now that you’re off to a good start and finding your groove, let’s look at some more ways to get out and get active. This week's theme is to explore the City's parks.

    Did you know? The City maintains 300 hectares of scenic park space, all for you to enjoy! The City’s Parks and Rec Finder is a great tool to learn about nearby parks and see the amenities offered. You can also search by amenity, so if you’re looking for something specific (like sports fields, community gardens or splash pads), you can search Barrie’s parks to find the location to suit your needs!

    You can also explore two of the City's parks, Sunnidale Park and Military Heritage Park, digitally and learn about them before you visit by using the interactive Community Parks Map. Did you know that Sunnidale Park was once a golf course? Until 1970, Sunnidale Park was the home of the Barrie Country Club.

    Please enjoy the City’s parks and waterfront safely, and view our guide to safe outdoor activities during COVID-19 before heading out.

    So, what are you waiting for? Take some time this week to enjoy our parks, and let us know if you do by sharing a photo or story!

  • Week 1 tips and motivation: Start slow

    Share Week 1 tips and motivation: Start slow on Facebook Share Week 1 tips and motivation: Start slow on Twitter Share Week 1 tips and motivation: Start slow on Linkedin Email Week 1 tips and motivation: Start slow link

    This week's theme is to start slow. Achieving a goal is no small task, especially a month-long goal!

    This week, aim to start slow and get outside in ways you are familiar and comfortable with, and that you enjoy! Some ideas are:

    Walking around the block;

    going for a short jog;

    gardening;

    or heading out for a bike ride.

    Keep accountable: Let your family and friends know you're taking the challenge!

    Another way to help achieve your goal is to involve your family and friends by telling them about your goal of 30 minutes of outdoor physical activity a day for 30 days. They may even be motivated to join you! Don't forget to keep track of your progress using our activity tracker.

    Tip: Set a realistic goal. You're busy, we get it! If you know there's one day you won’t be able to get out, try getting out for one hour the day before or after. Or, change your goal by challenging yourself to not miss two days in a row. For example: if you know you can’t make it out on Wednesday, then find a way to get out on Tuesday and Thursday! The key is setting a goal that is realistic for your lifestyle and sticking to it.

    What is your "go-to" physical activity to get outside? Let us know!

    There is an entire community of Barrie residents taking the challenge with you, so don't forget to share your stories and photos to encourage, motivate and inspire others!

    Remember to take it one day at a time, and have fun!
