The City of Barrie is asking members of the public to provide input regarding potential changes to the vacant and excess land property tax discount program for industrial and commercial properties in Barrie.

  • The City currently provides a 35% reduction to industrial properties and a 30% tax reduction to commercial properties that are considered either vacant or excess.
  • In 2019 there were approximately 430 such properties in the City that benefited from the tax discount. The impact of the discount was approximately $1.5 million and was redistributed to other property tax classes including commercial and industrial occupied as well as the residential tax classes.
  • Results of the survey will be summarized in a report to Council this spring and will inform staff recommendations for the future of the program for Council to consider. The survey closes on March 31.
