Infrastructure Standards Update: Cross Sections and Cycling Facilities
This consultation has concluded, thank you for sharing your feedback.
Introduction
The City of Barrie is considering proposed changes to its infrastructure standards and is looking to get feedback from stakeholders, specifically developer and developer consultants, industry associates, industry representatives as well as members of the public who may be interested.
Changes made to the standards have the potential to impact how all Barrie infrastructure is built, and we want to ensure that stakeholders have the opportunity to participate.
Proposed Change
Barrie is looking at creating a buffer zone within the road right-of-way between the dedicated bike lane and the travelled lane as the City works to expand the cycling network.
This change is being implemented to improve transportation safety for cyclists and drivers, and to align with a variety City of Barrie initiatives, as well as provincial traffic manuals noted below:
- Active Transportation and Cycling Network Expansion
- Transportation Master Plan – this document recommends the implementation of a city-wide comprehensive cycling network
- Active Transportation Strategy - this is Barrie's blueprint for walking and cycling infrastructure, programs and initiatives
- Ontario MTO Book 18 – Cycling facilities
- Official Plan (2018) – Section 5.4 Transportation
- And in the future, Section 4 (Planning a Connected and Mobile City) of the Official Plan (2022)
Impacted Standards (BSD refers to Barrie Standard Drawing)
- Transportation Design Manual
- Barrie Standard Drawing 303: BSD-303 (existing on website)
- Barrie Standard Drawing 304: BSD-304(existing on website)
- Barrie Standard Drawing 306: BSD-306(existing on website)

- BSD 304B - 26.0m Minor Collector
- BSD 306 - 26.0 Arterial Road Allowance 14.2m Asphalt
- BSD 303B - 24.0m Minor Collector
