Consultation has concluded.
As part of Council’s priority of community safety, and addressing speeding and aggressive driving, the City of Barrie uses a variety of traffic calming measures and road safety practices to keep our community and streets safe. Traffic-calmed streets improve residents’ quality of life and help increase safety for everyone, including pedestrians and cyclists.
Effective traffic calming measures used throughout Barrie include radar speed advisory boards, road diets, speed cushions (temporary and permanent), temporary planters, flexible bollard islands, and bollard chicanes. More recently, the City added Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras, which have already shown to be effective in slowing down motorists in community safety zones. Visit barrie.ca/traffic for more information on current traffic calming initiatives.
Barrie will use the funds from the fine payments from ASE to offset the costs of the program, including camera leases, signs, provincial offences officer salaries, and office expenses. The victim fine surcharge portion of the fine is submitted to the Province like any other ticket offence.
The City keeps any net fine revenue, after expenses are paid. If there is a surplus of revenue over expenses, funds will be reinvested by the City of Barrie back into the ASE program, other road safety, or traffic calming initiatives.
The ASE feedback survey is now closed. A Memo regarding an update of the ASE program, as well as a summary of the survey results, is on the October 30, 2024 Circulation List.
